Oncopoduridae - Oncopodura nr. yosiiana (sp. nov?)
Family Oncopoduridae
Oncopodura nr. yosiiana - undescribed species? Size: 0.51 mm Group Guild Status Eutroglophile Fungivore Uncommon? At the time of Christiansen and Bellinger’s monograph on the Collembola of North America (1998) there were 13 distinct species of Oncopodura known in North America, two of which were undescribed. Most North American Oncopodura are blind and de-pigmented cavernicolous species. O. yosiiana is recorded from California and Asia however, the specimens from California attributed to this species were incomplete, and the determination uncertain. The California records were from both cave and epigean habitats (Christiansen and Bellinger 1998). The Kartchner Caverns species could be the same one that is recorded from California (which may not be O. yosiiana), or it may be a distinct species that may be endemic to the cave. DNA information will probably be required to accurately place the Kartchner Caverns population. |
